When first scoping out Generac dealers in your area, you should use a search engine such as Google or Bing. By searching something like "Generac dealers near me", you should find a list of different options around you.



Once you have these options in front of you, you should click on their websites and then click on their 'About' pages. On these 'About' pages, you should find information about how long each company has been in business.

Generally speaking, the longer a company has been in business, the safer a bet it is. That said, as long as the company meets a minimum threshold of 2 years of experience, it should be a viable option. 

Assess Reputation

Read through these to get a feel for each company. Look for star ratings above 4 and generally positive reviews. Note, negative reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, as they're often given by biased and angry customers.

Inquire About Insurance Coverage

When your dealer is installing or repairing your Generac generator, they could cause incidental damage to your property. At the same time, one of their employees could become injured on your property. 



For both cases, you want to make sure that your dealer is properly insured. If they're not, you could end up having to pay for any damages or injuries that occur. That, or you could find yourself embroiled in a legal battle. 

This is why, before signing any contracts, make sure that you inquire about insurance coverage. Not only should you see proof of general liability insurance but workers' compensation insurance as well.

Make Sure They're Licensed

Not only should you ensure that they have insurance but you should also make sure that they're properly licensed. Licensure proves that they're legally allowed to work in the state. It also ensures that there's some sort of body regulating them.



There is no specific state licensure needed for the installation of Generac generators. However, the company should, at the very least, have a standard business license. And if they bill themselves as a plumbing company, HVAC company, or electric company, they should have the appropriate state certificates for those entities as well.

To determine whether a specific company is, indeed, licensed, use the North Carolina license lookup tool. Enter the name of the company and see if it pops up. If it does, it's legitimate.

Ensure That They're an Authorized Dealer

In addition to being licensed with the state, your Generac dealer should also be certified as an authorized dealer with Generac. This is proof that they've passed necessary training courses and have a thorough knowledge of what Generac installation entails.



Some companies might attempt to sell Generac generators without such authorization. These companies should be avoided entirely, as they may miss necessary steps during the installation. 

Before hiring any company, ask to see proof of their authorization. They should be able to present you with a certificate of approval, specifically.

Ask About a Warranty

Generac generators come with warranties. Therefore, if there's something defective about the one you receive, you will get a new one or a replacement part cost-free.



However, that's not the only warranty you need to wonder about. You also need to wonder about a labor warranty. Namely, does your chosen dealer offer one? 

If not, you should go with someone else. If so, you should assess its specifics and determine whether it meets your comfort levels. Regardless, you want to make sure that the job is covered to some extent monetarily. 

Get Estimates

Different Generac dealers will charge different rates for their services. There's no getting around that. Therefore, before you hire anyone, you're strongly advised to get estimates from your many options.



Call up the companies you're considering and simply ask for a quote on the type of work you're looking to have done. Any reputable dealer will provide you with an itemized quote upon your asking. 

Once you've received several estimates, compare them to one another. Note that the lowest price isn't always the best deal, as low prices can sometimes indicate a lack of quality or lack of experience. Also, note that the highest price doesn't necessarily indicate the best service. 

Simply use these estimates to inform your decision, not to make it for you in its entirety.
